THE TERRIBLE SKOPJE EARTHQUAKE HAPPENED ON THIS DAY
Every July 26, Skopje remembers... 59 years since the catastrophic earthquake that in 20 seconds took 1070 victims and more than 3000 injured, while 65 percent of the buildings were destroyed. Aid arrived from 65 countries around the world. Skopje has become a city of solidarity and togetherness
A large number of religious temples and buildings were also damaged in the earthquake.
In the earthquake of 1963, Skopje experienced an unprecedented disaster and the city had to take on a different shape. Skopje was catastrophically destroyed and according to the statements of many world urban planners, such as Ciborovski and Kenzo Tange. From the cultural-historical sights, the following were almost completely destroyed: Church "St. Constantine and Elena", Suli an, Kapan an, Arasta and Kazanjiler mosques, and Gulchiler hammam. Partially destroyed were the Catholic Church, the Chifte hammam, Kurshumli an, the church "St. Spas", Bezisten, Kose Kadi Mosque and Mustafa Pasha Mosque. On that occasion, we look back at the meaning and history of some of these buildings that suffered in the Skopje earthquake.
